Claude Haiku 5.5 arrives in GitHub Copilot
Claude Haiku 5.5 is rolling out in GitHub Copilot across IDEs, CLI and its cloud coding agent, subject to plans, admin policies and usage-based pricing.
GitHub adds Claude Haiku 5.5 to Copilot, including the cloud coding agent. Availability is rolling out and depends on plan and model policy.
Claude Haiku 5.5 was not previously announced as a generally available model for these Copilot surfaces.
GitHub announces general availability with a gradual rollout across eligible Copilot plans and clients.
On October 7, 2026, GitHub announced Claude Haiku 5.5 as a generally available model in GitHub Copilot. GitHub describes it as a lightweight choice for frequent coding work, such as subagents, quick edits and terminal tasks. The provider says early tests showed performance close to Claude Sonnet 5 on many coding tasks while requiring fewer tokens and steps. That comparison is GitHub’s own report, not an independent AgentenCode benchmark.
The announcement covers more than one editor. GitHub lists Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, Copilot CLI, the Copilot app, github.com, GitHub Mobile, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode and Eclipse. Crucially for this directory, it also explicitly lists the GitHub Copilot cloud coding agent. Eligible users can choose the model in the relevant model picker once the rollout has reached their account.
General availability does not mean simultaneous visibility for every user. GitHub says rollout is gradual. The listed plans are Copilot Pro, Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise. Administrators for Copilot Business and Enterprise can control access via Copilot model policies, while their default enablement configuration also determines whether new models are automatically allowed.
Pricing is a material part of the release. GitHub says Claude Haiku 5.5 is billed at provider list prices under usage-based billing. Teams should not treat a lightweight model as a free model by default; applicable pricing, allowances and organizational usage policies must be reviewed before choosing it for repetitive agent workloads.
For the GitHub Copilot Coding Agent, the primary source now documents an additional model option. It does not establish that every pull request becomes better, that permissions have changed or that an organization must switch models. Repository access, pull-request review and CI remain separate safeguards. Model availability is a product fact with plan and rollout scope, not a substitute for field-level security evidence or workload-specific evaluations.
